NFL Receiver Divas

NFL receiver divas treat Sunday like an unruly child in church. NFL receiver divas are ultra competitive and feel that all passes should go to them. When I’m playing Madden football, I always feel I need to throw to the number one wide receiver at least five times per game. That’s what they demand. As a quarterback, you’ve got to feed the number one receiver even if you have to force the pass into tight windows.

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford fell for it recently.

Last Sunday against the Ravens, Stafford threw a deep pass to Odell Beckham Jr. when he had two other receivers open underneath. By the time the bomb got to Beckham, there were three defenders on OBJ. A check-down pass would’ve gotten an easy first down. Instead, the Ravens got the ball and ultimately scored.

This is the thing with wide receivers. They are supremely confident in their abilities. It's an isolated position. They excel by getting the offensive coordinator to tell the quarterback to throw them the ball. To them they are always open, even when they’re not.

That’s the story today with now former Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Brown. The real reason he walked off the field during Sunday’s game against the Jets was because he wasn’t getting enough target passes from quarterback Tom Brady. Just like a diva, he pulled off his pads and made a big show walking off stage when he didn’t get his way.

Former NFL receiver diva Terrell Owens made a total diva move today

Owens said he could replace Antonio Brown on the Buccaneers. Owens is 48 years-old and hasn’t played in the NFL since 2010. He was last seen on a football field in 2012 for a Canadian team. This is the type of delusional self confidence that diva receivers must have. Terrell Owens loves himself some Terrell Owens.

I’m surprised former NFL receiver Chad Ocho Cinco Johnson hasn’t made a comeback overture to the Buccaneers, but the day ain’t over yet. Chad Johnson is the epitome of a diva receiver. Johnson was part showman and part highlight reel.

A player doesn’t get to be where he is if he doesn’t produce. Chad Johnson could have fun because he was the best at what he did on the team. He had over a thousand yards receiving in seven of eight years of the eleven seasons he played. Johnson was a star and rightfully so and he knew it.

He pulled stunts before other players did.

Johnson established brand recognition before social media. He was the first player to come up with different celebrations after a touchdown and he’d get reprimanded for it. Now they have cameras covering touchdown antics.

Chad Johnson sent packages of Pepto Bismol to the Cleveland Browns secondary before he played against them. He taunted the best corner backs in the league during pregame warmups. A team employee fired because of one of his stunts. The ball boy brought out an oversized gold NFL Hall of Fame jacket that he draped over Johnson’s shoulders after a touchdown.

The list goes on. NFL receiver divas do things to keep them fired up to hold themselves accountable. They have to. They have self imposed reputation standards to uphold.

Establishing standards and living up to them is important in life. Some aren’t going to appreciate it, but that’s the way it goes if you want to excel and be the best.
